Who doesn’t like having a sleek and modern look to their home?  I certainly do! The constant problem, however, is finding the balance between the aesthetic things that make my home feel more homey, whilst also searching for durability and practicality due to having cats, a baby, and a husband who doesn’t know when things are “nice” and need to be treated as such (IYKYK!). These two simple additions that complement our couch in our family room have proven to be great purchases. We’ve had each for 3 years and they are still going strong.

First, the table is PERFECT! It has that rusty, aesthetic black vibe to it, but the coating on the wood is extremely easy to clean and doesn’t stain or damage easily. When we have guests over, they’re always wanting to put their drink on a coaster, and though we have them, it isn’t necessary to use one for either hot or cold drinks.  It’s a wooden table with an elegant appearance, but it is actually able to get beat up and cleaned off/restored very easily (we don’t have a single stain or chip on it despite taking real no precautions with drinks, food, etc.). We eat over it and spill foods/liquids on it nearly daily, but after a simple wipe-down it appears as new. Just earlier today I left a frozen milk-sickle (for our teething baby) out on the table with nothing underneath it. Our little one eventually stopped crying and I was able to get her to take a nap, but I forgot about the milk sickle and it had melted all over the table while I was putting her down for her nap. No problem though – I just wiped it with a paper towel and the table looks like new. Little side note: The milk popsicles that I’m referring to can be found here and they’ve been helpful for giving our teething baby both some cold relief on her gums whilst satisfying her craving for milk. They’re easy to use and our baby has liked them. They’re one of the items that you don’t realize you want or need until you use them, and fortunately one of our friends recommended them to us when our baby started teething.

Okay – back to family room décor, sorry, just trying to help my mommas or friends of mommas (gift idea??) out there! The second item to our family room is The lamp in the thumbnail above and can be found here. The lamp has three settings for more or less lighting and this video shows the versatile functionality that it possesses. I enjoy it because it overhangs perfectly over the corner of our sectional, but doesn’t get in the way of anyone that is sitting there (nobody has ever bumped their head on it). The angle of lighting that it provides is ideal for reading and lets me cozy up in the corner in the mornings or evenings when the sun isn’t up. These items have been the two staple items that really have come to define our family room. Since it is where I spend the majority of my time reading and taking care of my baby, I have come to love both of them and I hope you can too!
